Experience an adventure unlike anything else in the world.

PacSet proudly announces our third adventure to Ogasawara! Awarded the designation of UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011 and often-called the “Galapagos of the Far East,” the Ogasawara Islands (also known as the Bonin Islands) are a chain of remote islands where nature, history, and beautiful tropical views intertwine to create a destination unlike any other. You’ll enjoy sandy beaches, snorkel with dolphins and tropical fish in their natural habitat, explore old caves and bunkers from World War II, visit amazing “locals” such as baby sea turtles and Bonin flying foxes, and much more!

Not enough? The tour also includes a special extended stay that features two nights in Tokyo and one night in a hot spring Ryokan at Kinugawa Onsen! We’ll explore the gorgeous temples of Nikko, enjoy a stop at a summer “beer garden”, kick back in the soothing waters of the onsen and explore the Kanto area. If you need a little more time in the city, you can also add on our Tokyo extension for after the tour!

If you’re ready to see a truly un-explored corner of the globe and have an amazing adventure that no other company offers, this is the tour for you!

NOTE: The itinerary you see here is not finalized and is subject to adjustments and changes.
Day 1: Departure
Depart your home country for Japan.

Day 2: Arrival!
Upon arrival in Tokyo, we’ll head to our hotel and get settled in. In the evening, you can choose to shop, rest, or meet with the guides to go over the journey to come.

Day 3: Across the Ocean
After breakfast, we’ll gather a bunch of bento and head for the port. On board, we’ll wave goodbye to Tokyo and take in views of the Rainbow Bridge and the bay before hitting the open ocean for Ogasawara. You’ll be staying in upgraded bunks on the boat, and we’ll help pass the time with some games and activities.

Day 4: Sand and Surf
After we awake from our bunks, we’ll arrive at Chichijima’s Futami Port, where our hosts will meet up with us and help us to our accommodations. After lunch, we’ll head across the island to Kominato Beach and Kopepe Beach, where you’ll have the chance to swim, snorkel, and explore! Then we head home for our first dinner on the islands.

Day 5: Under the Sea
Grab your mask – we’re hitting the water on a full-day snorkeling trip! After some test dives, we’ll be hopping into the water to swim with the dolphins and fish in their natural habitat. You’ll then visit the protected island of Minamijima, home to numerous endangered species and the most legendary beach views in Japan. After a quick lunch and some more passes around Anijima/other snorkeling spots, we’ll head back to shore to rest. In the evening, join us for a special “night tour” of Ogasawara, where you’ll catch a glimpse of the glowing “Green Pepe” mushrooms and the legendary Bonin flying fox.

Day 6: Terra Firma
Today we stick to land to explore the history of Chichijima! We’ll pass the church started by American settlers, peer over cliffs for views of the island’s secluded beaches, and even go spelunking in caves and bunkers once used by Japanese forces in World War II. After lunch, we’ll keep exploring and finish the day at the local Turtle Sanctuary, where both baby (and GIANT) sea turtles await your visit. In the evening, if the sanctuary allows, we might even get to see the turtles come ashore!

Day 7: Freedom and Flippers
Today is a free day! Head back onto the water, rent a bike, or just chill on the beach. In the evening, if the local sea turtles are feeling friendly, join an optional trek to the beach as we watch these locals come ashore to tend to their eggs.

Day 8: From the Mountains to the Sea
In the morning, we’ll have some free time for a little last-minute island exploration. Bike rentals will be provided if you want them. After lunch, we’ll regroup and board the ferry for the trip back to Tokyo. On board, we’ll have another dinner and game night before calling it a night.

Day 9: All Ashore!
We’ll be finishing our journey across the ocean today, so after we have some meals on the boat and dock back in Tokyo, we’ll have a free afternoon so you can recover from the long journey. That night, we’ll head out to a summertime “beer garden” to have a little bbq and take in some expansive city views.

Day 10: Onsen Therapy
After all that traveling, it’s time for a little relaxation! Today, we’ll board an express train out to Kinugawa Onsen, where you’ll be able to experience the soothing natural waters of the area hot springs and explore the picturesque, storybook surroundings. Your guide will be on hand for advice and tips as you get pampered the traditional way.

Day 11: Return home
Return home and make your friends jealous with the stories from your trip!

It will be a long trip on the ferry to and back on this Ogasawara Islands tour. What do all of the classes mean, and should you upgrade?

Suites: There are a few classes of Suite Rooms available on the boat. The top level ones are basically like a hotel room, while the other rooms are a little smaller. All of these rooms (called “Class 1”) include larger TVs and bathrooms. Prices vary based on availability and the class selected.
Additional cost: ~$700 to $1600 — Please consult with us before choosing this option.

S2 Class: This is the class we’ll be in. This class features your own bunk bed, arranged in the style of an old-school “pullman sleeper car” used on many train lines in North America and Japan. It’s similar to a hostel – and a lot more private than the Economy (or “Class 2” section). Bathrooms are shared. The new boat also includes in-bunk televisions.

Economy: The cheapest class on the boat includes a floor mat, pillow, and blanket in a large room that you share with the other passengers. It’s a cozy slumber party, and you can get to know the other passengers better. Bathrooms are shared. Not recommended if sleeping on the floor isn’t your thing. We aren’t offering this class on the site,
but if you are interested, let us know!
